One of our favourite dry flies for searching shallow to medium depth water when presenting a nymph under a dry, often called the duo method, Klink and Dink, New Zealand style or dry dropper.
Tied as a CDC sedge, it has a shaggy hare's ear and squirrel dubbed body with a chartreuse flash dubbing butt for that classic egg-laying caddis profile. The pattern is deliberately over-dressed with CDC over a deer hair underwing, so it will comfortably hold up two 2.5mm tungsten beaded nymphs even in fast water. Unlike a Klinkhamer style fly it needs no floatant treatment, and it lands softly on the water, so it won't scare fish on those casts that don't quite hit the spot first time.
Don't just think of it as a bite detector either, as this fantastic searching dry often brings fish up off the bottom for a mouthful from the surface.
